•Superhydrophilic TiO2 nanotube film is prepared on Ti mesh by anodic oxidation.•Superhydrophilic TiO2/Ti mesh turns to superhydrophobic by lauric acid modification.•Both superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic mesh separate oil/water mixture well.•Superhydrophobic mesh shows anti-icing property, thermal and mechanical stability.
