Obesity and labor market outcomes in Mexico

espanolLa obesidad tiene un impacto adverso no solo en la salud, sino tambien en el mercado de trabajo. Con base en informacion antropometrica y el indice de masa corporal (IMC), analizamos los efectos de la obesidad sobre el empleo y los salarios de los mexicanos entre los 20 y 60 anos. Se utilizo el IMC de los hijos como variable instrumental para el IMC de sus padres. Los resultados muestran que para los hombres el IMC no afecta a estas variables. Para las mujeres, un incremento en una desviacion estandar en el IMC esta asociado con una perdida del 16% en los salarios por hora. Estos hallazgos son robustos a distintas especificaciones. EnglishObesity has an adverse impact not only on health but also on the labor market outcomes of individuals. Using anthropometric data and the body mass index (BMI), we analyze the effects of obesity on the decision to work and the wages of Mexican workers aged 20-60. We use children’s BMI as an instrumental variable for the BMI of their parents. Our results show that for men, BMI does not affect their decision to work or their wages. For women, however, an increase of one standard deviation in the BMI is associated with a 16% decrease in hourly wages. The findings are highly robust under different specifications.
