•Survival of Rubiaceae species is possible by very low mean light compensation points.•Low photosynthetic rates point to the main role of shade tolerance in the gradient.•Species distributions in the gradient were best explained by SLA and leaf thickness.•Topography is important to understand understory “swarms” in tropical forests.
