•A triple-area control system was developed to cooperatively remove SO2 and NO.•The removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were 98.2% and 100%, respectively.•SO2 and NO acted as the promoters for each other.•The products were identified to be Na2SO4 and NaNO3 according to IC analysis.
