Unravelling surface changes on Cu-Ni alloy upon immersion in aqueous media simulating catalytic activity of aerobic biofilms

•Aerobic microbial activity of biofilms is mimicked by an enzymatic reaction.•The selectivity of XPS analysis is improved to discriminate between inorganic and organic compounds.•The enzymatic reaction causes the formation of a hybrid copper-gluconate layer on the Cu-Ni surface.
