On the accuracy of partially averaged Navier–Stokes resolution estimates

•Different resolution estimates for Partially Averaged Navier–Stokes methods are compared.•Spatially varying resolution computations are sensitive to the applied estimates.•The estimates as found in literature show an incorrect trend.•The estimates are not applicable to internal, boundary layer, flows.•The constant resolution approach is preferable to minimise numerical errors.
