•Ready-to-implant anisotropic menisci in goat was generated by one-step 3D-bioprinting.•Limitations of cell-seeding and cell-scaffold stability was addressed by sequentially printing MSC-laden hydrogels with PCL.•Meniscus construct showed resemblance to native meniscus and conferred long-term chondroprotection in vivo.•We envision a 3D–bioprinted human-scale meniscus scaffold for surgery using the mini-invasive arthroscopic procedures.
