Rapid preparation of adsorbent based on mussel inspired chemistry and simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions in water

•The combination of oxidant and ethylenediamine enabled rapid coating of dopamine.•Simultaneously removal of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) by the combining of multiple sites.•Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption speed of the fabric was fast.•The adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals were proposed.•PP/PDA/ASA showed excellent recycling ability in desorption experiment.
