•Prosocial themes in preschoolers’ mental representations were related to lower peer victimization.•Physical victimization was a negative predictor of school adjustment and prosocial attention from peers was a positive predictor.•Prosocial themes were indirectly associated with better school adjustment via lower physical victimization.
