•LIBS was used for the detection of adulterants in honey for the first time.•Fast, clean, and simple analysis.•PLD-DA models capable of detecting and identifying the type of adulterant.•A PLS model to quantify adulterants in different types of honey.•Multivariate filters and variable selection significantly improved the model fit.
