•A chronometric method for measuring laccase activity has been developed.•The method is applicable to a wide variety of methoxyphenols as substrates of laccase.•It measures the time “τ” the enzyme system takes to consume a certain amount of ascorbic acid.•Methoxyphenols as laccase substrates are kinetically characterized.
