摘要
We present some key results of our survey of 70 enterprise architects from higher education institutions in 19 countries. The survey was based on questions generated by a previous grounded theory study. We sought to understand the frameworks, tools and models the enterprise architects use, as well as what they like and dislike about them. Probably the most notable result of the survey is that enterprise architects do the vast majority of their modelling using spreadsheets, generic drawing tools, word processors and presentation tools. The only special-purpose modelling tool to be used significantly was ArchiMate, with about 40% using it at least a little. No other special-purpose modelling tool or tool category was used by more than 17% of the participants. Participants indicated that 'ease of use', 'cost effective' and 'facilitates collaboration' were the most important things they liked about their tools. On the other hand, the aspects of tools they most disliked related to lack of integration and validation of information. Application models, capability models and data models are the most widely managed types of models, although enterprise architects tend to also make moderate use of business process, service, security and enterprise models. 89% of participant used the TOGAF framework to some extent, although the Gartner and CAUDIT approaches also have significant influence. The results should help guide enterprise architects in improving their processes, and should guide tool developers in improving their products.
