Solid-core bismuth–tellurite glass fiber with low propagation loss and high nonlinearity

•A SM Bi-doped tellurite solid-core glass fiber was made and characterized as candidates of fiber laser.•This fiber features relatively low propagation loss of 0.9 dB/m at 1550 nm.•The biggest third nonlinearity is presented in solid-core TZN-Bi glass fiber.
