Abstract
•Phase transition of 1T′–Td in MoTe2 under high pressure was confirmed.•Pressure controllable phase transition in MoTe2 originates from the difference of the interlayer band occupancies.•Dome-like superconductivity originates from change of density of states at Fermi energy and soften phonon mode around S-point.
