•Thin films of Au Au-Al2O3 were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering.•Au-Al2O3 films manifest plasmonic behaviour after thermal treatment.•Au concentration and temperature of annealing influence the LSPR band behaviour.•Density of exposed nanoparticles increases after surface plasma treatment.•Optimized film responds to refractive indices changes of the surrounding medium.
