•PpIX- Np had greater location of the PpIX in the deeper layers of the skin.•Nanoparticles causes no fibroblast damage in the dark (good biocompatibility).•The increased CC50 of PpIX-Np means lower cellular phototoxicity to fibroblast.•Cell recovery ˜100% after PDT with PpIX-Np means potential for topical use.
