•FeMn crustal outcrop covers upwards of 35% of Tropic Seamount’s mineable summit.•Outcrop pattern and crustal thickness are decoupled from the hydrodynamic regime.•Surface erosion of crusts is related to current speeds and bedload sediment erosion.•Optimum growth conditions for FeMn crusts exist at average currents <0.1 m/s.
