Energy and emergy analysis for assessing changes in Polish agriculture since the accession to the European Union

•The study investigated two groups of Polish farms before and after the accession to EU.•The methods used were energy analysis and emergy accounting.•Group of farms after EU accession operated more efficiently – it has higher O/I ratio than group before accession.•For both groups the Emergy Sustainability Index was similar.
