•Milk production was unaffected by the restriction of access time to pasture.•Milk production increased by 0.82 kg/d per kg DM of dehydrated lucerne.•Pasture intake decreased between 11 and 7 h/d of access time.•Pasture intake rate tended to increase between 11 and 7 h/d of access time.•Substitution rate between pasture and dehydrated lucerne was 0.72.
