•We assess how much land is required to support feed and food consumption in Denmark.•Hectares of land displaced in other countries to satisfy Danish demand are revealed.•The total land footprint of Danish food and feed decreased by 18% from 2000 to 2013.•Share of cropland used for feed declined by 5% and increased by 32% for food.•Reduction of livestock consumption and increased self-sufficiency are key drivers.
