•Recovering lithium from simulated pyro-slag of spent lithium ion battery.•Deionized water was employed as a leaching agent and CaCl2 as a roasting agent.•The aqueous leaching rate of lithium is higher than 90%.•Thermodynamical parameters provided effective guidance for experimental purpose.
