A measurement and evaluation method for wheel–rail contact forces and axle stresses of high-speed train

•The calibration is done in rolling conditions of a dynamic roller rig.•The calibration methods proposed allow to quantify the precision of the measure.•A minimizing approach identifies relationship between strain measurements and forces.•All components of contact force (vertical, lateral and longitudinal) are measured.
