•Dynamic fracture toughness is estimated using four methods based on impact load curves.•Dynamic fracture toughness decreased with the applied welding thermal cycles.•The change of JId value is mainly dependent upon the stretch zone width.•JId value is most acceptable when the crack initiation point is determined by (Py + Pm)/2.
