•Rice paddy fields within typhoon swath are found to be able to reduce economic damage caused by typhoons in China.•Typhoon protection services by rice paddy fields is valuated to be comparable to its other services in the same order of magnitude.•Rice paddy fields provide less valuable typhoon protection than the coastal wetlands do.
