Using fertiliser to maintain soil inorganic nitrogen can increase dryland wheat yield with little environmental cost

•APSIM was used to evaluate a novel N fertiliser strategy in a semi-arid environment.•Wheat yield and profit increased when using N fertiliser to maintain inorganic N (N bank).•N bank strategy did not increase denitrification and N leaching.•N bank strategy increased soil organic matter.
