•Experimental study of an electrolyte supported solid oxide cell prototype stack.•Performance of a 5YbSZ electrolyte is investigated with H2/H2O/CO/CO2 mixtures.•Temperature mapping inside the stack showed thermal improvements.•H2O reactions are promoted under co-electrolysis at low currents.•The syngas ratio is independent of the current density applied.
