Post-decorated surface fluorophores enhance the photoluminescence of carbon quantum dots

•Carboxylic-terminated carbon quantum dots have been synthesized from citric acid.•The formation of surface fluorophores by amine treatment has been demonstrated.•The surface fluorophores added new absorption band at 346 nm.•The surface fluorophores enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield of carbon quantum dots.
