•Minimum air pressure recommended for a GLIDES system is found to be at a 2.7 pressure ratio.•More than 80% of the GLIDES system cost is associated with the cost of pressure reservoir.•Underground reservoirs / abandoned pipelines can be a good fit.•Energy storage costs as low as $13/kWh can be reached.
