•Buffaloes are economically very important but have poor reproductive efficiency when compared to cattle.•Silent estrus is a common and major problem in water buffaloes causing economic losses.•Need for efficient and animal friendly method of timely estrus detection.•Voice of animals reflect different phases of estrous cycle.•Present study calculated threshold values of vocal features for estrus detection.
