•Altering fluid pulsation waveform can significantly enhance fluid fluctuations in mesochannels.•Asymmetric excitation waveforms with sharp impulses results in higher order velocity fluctuations.•Wall shear and therefore heat transfer may be enhanced this way with negligible pressure drop penalty.
