•Self-collected swabs are highly acceptable, comfortable and simple.•Self-collected swabs are highly accurate in the diagnosis of influenza.•Any error from self-collected swabs is insufficient to invalidate potential studies.•Our findings support the use of self-swabbing in vaccine trials.
