•No studies tested the combined effects of oxytocin and social learning in children.•CBM training was combined with OT to asses effects on trust in mother.•CBM was effective at an automatic level of processing, OT had no effects.•CBM with OT was less positive for children with elevated internalizing behaviour.•Specification of parameters for when OT might have positive effects is needed.
