•Incorporation of oxygen dramatically improves the adsorption of Hg2+ on MoS2.•Oxygen atom greatly facilitates the hydrated Hg2+ ions to approach to MoS2 surfaces.•Oxygen greatly enhance complexation between sulfur atoms and Hg2+ on MoS2 surfaces.•Increase of adsorption capacity with increasing oxygen atoms will reach a plateau.
