•Gelatin-Methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel was optimized for microextrusion based bioprinting.•The crosslinking parameters of the constructs was optimized.•The 3D printed periodontal ligament cells showed negligible cytotoxicity.•The cells in the 3D printed construct started elongating and proliferating with time.
