•N. caninum is transmitted via transplacental in pigs.•N. caninum causes reproductive problems such as mummified fetuses.•Infected gilts in the gestational 1° and 2° thirds give rise to more mummified.•Endogenous infection occurs in pigs, and the protozoan is reactivated in the 3° third of gestation.•The main fluid for detection of N. caninum in piglets is saliva.
