Traveling monastic paths: Mobility and religion at medieval Irish monasteries

•No significant difference was revealed in the percentage of non-local individuals between the religious and lay communities.•At four of five sites, individuals moved closer to the monastery over the course of their lives.•Irish monasteries were sustained by the local communities rather than by an influx of non-locals.•Religious and lay communities in medieval Ireland were closely connected.
