Effect of stem cover on hydraulic parameters of overland flow

•We measured flow depth and velocity with different vegetation stem cover.•The reduction in flow velocity can be as high as 90% for 30% stem cover.•The τ, Ω, and ω were all significantly affected by the stem cover and slope.•The τ, Ω, and ω could be described with an exponential delay function of the cover.
