•A new method for preparing CNTs/Cu-Al2O3 composite powders is proposed.•Internal oxidation of Cu-Al alloy powders promotes the formation of nano-copper particles.•Nano-copper particles are catalyst for CNTs growth.•The CNTs stand uniformly on the powders and well bonded to matrix.
