Maize radiation use-efficiency response to optimally distributed foliar-nitrogen-content depends on canopy leaf-area index

•We set up a canopy photosynthesis model to analyze theoretical responses of maize photosynthetic capacity.•Contrasting scenarios of leaf area, foliar nitrogen content and foliar nitrogen distribution were tested.•Results indicated that leaf area index affects nitrogen distribution profiles and radiation-use efficiency responses to foliar nitrogen.
