Abstract
•The genera Hymenaea and Peltogyne are supported as monophyletic while Guibourtia is paraphyletic in our reconstruction.•Taxa of the Hymenaea clade have a stable chromosome number 2n = 24.•Chromosome banding patterns, length and symmetry are useful to distinguish taxa.•Variation of centromere position and 5S rDNA bands showed a phylogenetic signal.•The variation of CMA+ bands could be related to spatial and climatic effects.
