Abstract
The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was introduced into the national immunization schedule in Kazakhstan in 2010. The implementation of vaccination throughout the country took place from 2010 through 2015. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of PCV13 vaccination on the epidemiological burden of pneumonia across different age groups and regions in Kazakhstan. Official data regarding pneumonia incidence in the total population, as well as in under-14, under-5 and under-1 age groups, available from national statistical compendiums from 2009 to 2017, were used in this study. Statistical methods involved computing confidence intervals, conducting run test and correlation analysis between pneumonia incidence and start of vaccination. An increasing trend of pneumonia incidence in Kazakhstan in the total population (from 613.7 per 100 000 in 2009 to 716.2 per 100 000 in 2017) and in children under 14 years of age (from 1341.7 per 100 000 in 2009 до 1468.3 100 000 in 2017) was observed , as well as a decreasing trend in the under-1 (from 47.1 per 1000 in 2009 to 25.1 per 1000 in 2017) and under-5 (from 25.1 per 1000 in 2009 to 21.4 per 1000 in 2017) age groups. No association between pneumonia incidence and start of vaccination was observed across the total population and the under-14 group, while an inverse association was observed in the under-1 and under-5 age groups. Considerable variations in pneumonia incidence exist across different regions of Kazakhstan. The study provides some insight into the epidemiological status of pneumonia in the years after the start of the implementation of PCV13 vaccination as part of the national immunization schedule.
