Renal transplantation offers the best outcome for sickle cell disease (SCD) patients with End Stage Renal Disease, although outcomes are poorer than in other groups. Regular exchange blood transfusions (EBT) reduce the complications of SCD and may improve fitness for transplantation. However, concerns over HLA sensitisation with EBT limit its widespread implementation. We sought to assess the impact of EBT on outcomes in SCD patients undergoing renal transplantation.
