A Comparative Study of the Influence of the Strain-Hardening in Chip Formation Simulations using Different Software Packages

Childs has proposed a method for the parameterization of the strain-hardening model in orthogonal cutting simulations of carbon steels utilizing the finite element-based software AdvantEdge [1]. The approach led to promising results regarding the applicability of the material model for a comparatively broad range of machining parameters. In this paper Childs’ approach was applied in the finite element-based software Deform. The analyses clearly show that simulation results deviate stronger from experimental values if the approach is followed. It is concluded that the approach does not generally improve the representation of the strain-hardening behavior of carbon steels in chip formation simulations.
