Modelling white-tailed deer impacts on forest regeneration to inform deer management options at landscape scales

•Deer effects were not consistent across species or space.•Modelled regeneration of five species declined with increasing deer abundance.•Modelled regeneration of four species peaked at intermediate deer abundance.•Results indicate where deer management would have positive effects on regeneration.•For many areas, deer reductions alone may not improve regeneration.
