•The effects of total knee arthroplasty on postural balance were assessed.•Follow-up periods of included studies ranged from 1–24 months.•Postural balance was overall improved compared to preoperative status.•Deficits in postural balance were generally present compared to healthy controls.•Improvements were more prominent in clinical-based measures of postural balance.
