West African Sahelian cities as source of carbon stocks: Evidence from Niger

•Urban forest carbon stock of Sahel Cities may be substantial.•Carbon densities varied strongly with urban LULC types in both cities.•Exotic species contributed about 65% of the total carbon stocks in the two cities.•Conversion of peri-urban forests to urban forests may be carbon neutral in both cities.
