•Caribbean red algae contain antioxidant compounds able to protect human LDLs.•Extracts with antioxidant activity were obtained by Supercritical fluid.•Extracts from H. musciformis may protect LDLs from oxidation more effectively than vitamin E.•Antioxidant activity of Hypnea musciformis is due to phloretin and epicatechin.
