Role of fallen logs in maintaining the species diversity of understory vascular plants in a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest in Hokkaido, northern Japan

•Plant species diversity on fallen logs was compared with forest floors.•Differences in composition between fallen logs and forest floors were significant.•Species richness on fallen logs was determined by microsite conditions of logs.•Fallen logs promote plant species diversity by creating distinct microsites.
