A comparison of macroinvertebrate-based indices for biological assessment of river health: A case example from the sub-tropical Richmond River Catchment in northeast New South Wales, Australia

•Macroinvertebrates are an important and commonly used bioindicator of river health.•This work compared six macroinvertebrate indices in an Australian coastal catchment.•Modified land use activities within the catchment cause a loss of macroinvertebrate biodiversity.•The macroinvertebrate indices inferred similar river health trends.
