•Binding of admixed chloride in cement paste is significantly improved with aluminum compound addition.•Aluminum compound addition promotes the formation of AFm phases and destabilizes the ettringite.•Admixed chloride benefits delayed ettringite formation, but this effect can be suppressed with aluminum compound addition.•Higher amount of admixed chloride results in less calcium hydroxide content and free water in hardened cement blends.
